MySpace Hacker Interviewed

The guys over at Google Blogoscoped interviewed the hacker (Samy) who recently wrote a worm that spread all over the MySpace.

Samy earlier this month wrote a worm that spread all over the MySpace web community – infecting everybody that crossed its path with “instant friendship, thus gaining Samy more than a million friends before the MySpace team disabled the worm (taking pretty much the whole site offline to do so). The automatically included message “samy is my hero, however, remains in thousands of homepages. I’ve email-interviewed Samy, who’s from Los Angeles (and likes to stay anonymous here).

AppleCrate: Apple II-Based Parallel Computer

Apple II Crate Wondering if your old Apple II is still good for something? Well this guy put together a collection of 8 Apple IIe boards into something he calls the AppleCrate.

In his paper he describes how he created an parallel processing computer using message queues, to send “work” to the queue and receive “results” from the queue.

_

My only question is, does it run Oregan Trail?

Improve iTunes Playback

iTunes Now you can set the “perfect” equalizer settings in iTunes.

Now if someone would come up with the same for the iPod. For listening to my iPod in the car, over FM modulator, I found setting EQ to Bass Boost improves the quality.

If you want to really want make your ears bleed* check out iPod Volume Booster or listen to Kenny G**.

* May not make your ears bleed.
** Will definitely make your ears bleed.

Google Talk Released

Google Talk Logo The Google Talk site is now live. It was reported yesterday that Google would unleash it’s IM client some time this week. It turns out that you can download Google Talk beta today. (isn’t every Google service beta?)

Google Talk requires a Gmail account as this is how you authenticate. So if you been holding out and don’t have a Gmail account you are out of luck. If you need an GMail invite post a comment to this thread. Between Derek and I, we have a hundred.

Google also went the extra step of not forcing their proprietery client on you. According to their site you can use any client that supports Jabber/XMPP. They even give a list of alternate IM clients. Since I use Trillian for everything, including Sametime, this is great.

The Google Talk client itself is very clean looking and lightweight. Cheers to Google!

From the site:

They say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google Talk offers you:

* Choice: Get in touch how and when you want to–over email, IM or a call

* Quality: Talk through your computer but hear your friends as if they were in the same room

* Convenience: Your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded into Google Talk so inviting or talking to your friends is just a click away

Run Doom on your iPod

iPod Doom I was just reading on AngryPigeon.com about Doom for the iPod. It seems that someone has gotten Doom to run under Podzilla (Linux on the iPod). I don’t know what to think. Between today’s earlier Windows 95 on the PSP and now this. Is no device safe from hacking? Let’s hope not.

Obviously to run Doom on your iPod you are going to need a 4G or iPod photo. This makes me want to trade in my old 3G iPod for a iPod photo. Anyone want to buy a used iPod? My only question on this is, according to the site fourth generation iPods are not supported by iPod Linux.

The setup instructions look fairly complicated. You have to build your own Podzilla since it requires several add-ons to run Doom.

Windows 95/Linux running on PSP

Win95PSPScreen shots show Windows 95 running on a PSP using Boch x86 emulator. I am not sure if I believe this one, I need to see it in action first. But this guy claims to be running Windows 95 on his PSP.

Yes, it’s true. I’ve managed to run Windows 95 and Linux on the PSP. I’ve done it by porting the excellent open source x86 emulator Bochs.

Windows 95 actually runs quite well but don’t expect it to be a speed demon. It takes about 10 minutes to boot but afterwards it’s pretty usable. I was able to do things like: open “My computer” and browse the virtual hard drive, complete a whole game of Minesweeper and run various other applications. Now you too can get your Minesweeper fix on the go :)

Site includes instructions for getting Windows 95 and DLX Linux running on your PSP.
